Adopting from Russia

Many North American couples and single parents are now adopting children from Russia. Often they go through adoption organizations such as Children's Hope International (CHI) to help handle the legal process in the territory of the Russian Federation.

There are children of all ages waiting for adoption in Russia. At any one time, it will be typical that more boys than girls are available for adoption. There are many children with special needs, as well as older children who need adopting.

Children's Hope International helps place children from orphanages and baby hospitals in Russia with adoptive parents and families. Adoption agencies such as this work with the prospective adoptive parents starting with the application paperwork up to the day when they actually hold their adoptive child in their arms.

When adopting from Russia or any foreign country, using an organization such as Children's Hope International can be a great asset. For example, CHI can make all travel arrangements for the adoptive parents inside of Russia including airport transfers and hotel reservations. They have Russian coordinators in Moscow who are very knowledgeable about the adoption process. These coordinators will meet and assist the adoptive parents during their time in Russia.

The entire adoption must be completed within the boundaries of Russia. The prospective parents must travel to Russia for all the important procedures such as court hearings. Even after you have been approved to adopt a Russian child and brought him or her home, there are follow-up procedures. Russia requires 4 Post Placement visits - 6 months after court, 1 year after, 2 years after and 3 years after.

Being in a foreign country can be very intimidating for prospective adoptive parents. Add the various scustom and language barriers and it becomes quickly obvious why organizations such as CHI are essential. Adoptive parents are not required to be married to adopt from Russia. Single women are eligible to adopt from Russia, if they can prove to have above average financial ability. As with any foreign adoption, when adopting from Russia, adoptive parents can expect the process to be expensive. The adoptive parents are responsible for all administrative fees, legal fees, medical fees and any other expenses which are related to the adoption process.

Since the adoptive parents is expected to spend time in Russia, travel costs to and from Russia must be considered - this can be very expensive. As it is unlikely that you will be staying the entire time it takes to go through the legal procedures in Russia, plan on making several trips for court proceedings and any other necessary meetings.

All in all, when adopting children from Russia, prospective adoptive parents can expect to pay approximately $30,000. A large dollar amount, but not so big in comparison to the joy and happiness an adoptive child can bring.
